My ongoing project ‘Jafaican’ reflect
s on the complicated black experience in England. The work builds on the feelings of incompleteness, marginalisation and shame that come as a result of attempts to integrate into the British society as a person with a Jamaican heritage. My methodology combines auto-ethnographical research, alongside self-portraiture, cyanotyped onto calico fabric. The film ‘Show Them We Haven’t Got Tail’ compliments these ideas, by opening up these conversations of identity and belonging with his family, and discussing shared experiences of alienation in England, guiding him towards a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.
