Finley Gilzene new body of work develops concept explored his ongoing body of work “Jafaican”, shedding light on hidden practices of marginalisation in contemporary society using his chosen mediums of cyanotypes, self portraiture and moving image. His current project references the historical use of ‘Lamprey’s grid’ by performing an experiment where the black body is measured behing a 2x2 inch grid. The work questions how archaic methods of scientific observation and systematic forms of alienation can induce shared feelings of anxiety and insecurity within supposed indivisual differences, specifically surrounding race. The experiment questions the extent to which our identity can be measured through visual standardisations and how past methods of segregation and abuse can link to micro aggressions felt daily by people of colour.

‘Two Inch Squares’ was displayed at the ICA during the GLUE festicval from the 13th September-14th September.
